Bottom of the arctic ocean

Short video description
A team of oceanographers are heading out on a voyage of discovery this month, exploring in detail for the first time a hydrothermal vent field in the Arctic Ocean. They are hoping to find some of the same geological, chemical, and biological processes at the Gakkel Ridge, an ultra-slow spreading rift system north of Greenland that also may be underway on outer worlds of our solar system. Many scientists now believe that if we want to find extraterrestrial life, the best place to look for it might be somewhere in the ice-covered oceans of Europa, Enceladus, or another moon of Jupiter, Saturn, or Neptune. They believe the same brew of geological and chemical conditions that might host primitive life at the bottom of the ice-covered Arctic may also be at work on these alien worlds. Ocean scientists and engineers are today conducting a dry run of sorts for the kind of mission that NASA's planetary scientists may launch in coming decades to in order to search for life beyond Earth.

Chlamydia-related bacteria discovered deep below the Arctic Ocean

From the late 19th century, when the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen first discovered an ocean in the central Arctic , until the middle of the 20th century, it was believed that the Arctic Ocean was a single large basin. Explorations after revealed the true complex nature of the ocean floor. Rather than being a single basin, the Arctic Ocean consists of two principal deep basins that are subdivided into four smaller basins by three transoceanic submarine ridges. The central of these ridges extends from the continental shelf off Ellesmere Island to the New Siberian Islands , a distance of 1, miles 1, km. This enormous submarine mountain range was discovered by Soviet scientists in —49 and reported in It is named the Lomonosov Ridge after the scientist, poet, and grammarian Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov. The Lomonosov Ridge has an average relief of about 10, feet and divides the Arctic Ocean into two physiographically complex basins.

The Arctic Ocean is the shallowest and smallest ocean with a total area of approximately 13,, square kilometers. It is believed that the origin of the Arctic ocean is in the Cenozoic Era, 65 million years ago. Unlike the Southern Ocean that surrounds an ice plate, the Arctic Ocean is surrounded by lands.
